Redland City Council will ensure the community is consulted on development of a new draft design for the proposed war memorial in Linear Park, Cleveland.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council’s decision to reaffirm its ‘in principle’ support for the RSL war memorial included conditions to address community concerns about the current concept.

“Today’s decision includes the Returned Services League of Australia Redlands RSL Sub Branch and National Servicemen Association of Australia Queensland working with Council to develop a revised concept and engage in further community consultation prior to approval of a new design for the memorial,” she said.

“Council has listened to community feedback, including the resident petition tabled at Council on 21 May 2014, and recognised the need for greater community engagement in the memorial park design before the agreed design comes back to Council for approval.

“We are committed to working with the RSL Sub-branch to help them create a memorial that honours the sacrifices of servicemen and servicewomen, while meeting wider community expectations for public open space.

“Council will take the lead role in ensuring a revised proposal is developed, taken to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines for formal advice and approval and taken to further community consultation.”
