Make dad’s day out at IndigiScapes

Are you looking for a fun way to celebrate Fathers’ Day?

Once breakfast in bed is done, why not head out to Redlands IndigiScapes Centre and join in Dad’s Day Out?

As part of national Bushcare’s Major Day Out celebrations, Dad’s Day Out will run from 10am – 2pm on Sunday 7 September.

There’ll be bushcare displays and workshops and lots of family-friendly hands-on activities including bird walks, weed weaving, building a frog pond, propagation, planting, native fish demonstrations and emerging weeds workshops.

There’ll also be the chance to meet a live koala, enjoy great music and entertainment and even take a short mystery bus trip.

It’s easy to make a family day of it by bringing a picnic, enjoying a sausage and drink from the community BBQ on offer, or having lunch at the Tea Garden Cafe.

Entry is free and all activities are free of charge.

Bushcare’s Major Day Out is a national day celebrating the work done by bushcare groups to restore conservation areas through tree plantings, weed removal, flora and fauna monitoring and seed collection and propagation.

With more than 40 groups currently operating in Redlands, there is plenty to celebrate locally.

New opening hours for Recycleworld

Council’s Recycleworld at Redland Bay Waste Transfer Station is now open on Thursdays and Saturdays, 9am – 2pm. Visit this treasure hunter’s dream to pick up pre-loved items such as books, bicycles, gardening tools, bric-a-brac, furniture, toys and spare parts.

Get in fast for next week’s Mayoral Prayer Breakfast

Tickets are selling fast for next week’s Mayoral Prayer Breakfast but if you miss out you can still support its cause – school chaplaincies in the Redlands.

Mayor Karen Williams said the popular annual event, to be held on Friday 29 August from 6.45am, was a great way for the community to make a difference by raising important funds for the chaplaincies.

“The breakfast is a great way to help the youth of Redland City by supporting our local school chaplaincy programs, which make a real difference to our students and schools,’’ she said.

“This support not only assists local schools, but it also has the potential to flow on to their families, helping the entire Redlands’ community.

“But with tickets limited for the breakfast and selling fast, you can still be involved by donating money through Council’s website.”

The key note speaker at Friday’s breakfast will be former NSW ambulance officer and police chief inspector Gary Raymond.

“Gary is inspirational, having dedicated his life to serving others,” Cr Williams said.

“During his career he headed up the elite NSW Police Rescue performing more than 1500 rescues, including 1000 motor vehicle accident rescues, 200 vertical rescues and 200 suicide crisis retrievals.

“He was on the front line for disasters such as the Granville train disaster and Thredbo landslide and his dedication to the force has been acknowledged through a number of awards, including an Order of Australia Medal.

“Today Gary works as a chaplain to the Police Post Trauma Support Group NSW, so he knows only too well the important role of chaplains in the community.”

The Mayoral Prayer Breakfast will be at Wellington Point’s Redlands Sporting Club.

Have your say on the local laws that help govern our city

Residents can now have their say on important topics such as keeping animals, running events and parking infringements, with engagement currently open on draft new local laws for Redland City.

These draft laws use the principles and framework of a set of model local laws developed by State Government and include updates to a range of areas from improving public safety, to making it easier for Council to direct people to clean up unsightly and overgrown properties.

Other key proposed changes include:

Local laws govern everything from holding events to what animals you can keep at your property, so everyone is encouraged to visit Council’s website to have their say.  Feedback is open now until 8 October.

Part four of Redland City’s disaster plan

The final piece of Redland City’s disaster strategy is taking shape with Council set to launch a dedicated website bringing together the four-part Disaster Management Plan.

The website will include all four parts of the Redland City Disaster Management plan, providing a “one stop shop” where residents can find all disaster related information by selecting their suburb or island.

The first two parts of the plan have previously been released and provide the legislative framework for the plan, along with specific plans for the city’s island communities.

Parts three and four are currently being finalised and will cover the remainder of Redland City, including information on how to prepare a home emergency plan and evacuation information.

A “work in progress” version of the website is currently available for residents to provide feedback at www.redlandsdisasterplan.com.au.

The final disaster plan is expected to be released by the end of September.

Help save the glossy black-cockatoo

Redland IndigiScapes Centre has glossy black-cockatoo conservation events happening in the next two months and we’re putting the call out for volunteers.

These stunning birds are unfortunately one of the more threatened species of cockatoo in Australia, and listed as vulnerable in Queensland.

It’s easy to help, just sign-up for the glossy black-cockatoo annual survey or the food and habitat tree planting.

Tree planting: More than 700 trees need to be planted on Sunday 21 September 2014 from 9.30am – 11.30am at Karrawarra Park, Macleay Island. IndigiScapes supplies the equipment; you just need to bring your own sun-smart clothes, water and enclosed shoes

Anyone commuting to this event from the mainland can catch the 9am ferry departing from Weinam Creek Marina, Banana Street, Redland Bay.  Please register with IndigiScapes on 3824 8611 to arrange transfers from the Macleay Island ferry terminal to the planting site.

Glossy black-cockatoo survey: Council will be conducting the annual glossy black-cockatoosurvey on Sunday 19October 2014. To join the glossy black-cockatoo survey, residents are asked to attend a volunteer workshop in September or October to hone their skills and be allocated a survey area before the survey day. Registration dates and details are available on the IndigiScapes website.

Did you know that Council offers a range of free workshops throughout the year to support local businesses? It’s a great way for Redlands businesses to take advantage of training and education they would otherwise pay top dollar to receive.

Workshops are generally run outside business hours and presented by experts in their fields. Places at all workshops are limited, so it’s a good idea to book early to avoid disappointment.

Bloomfield Street Park: a fun way to have your say!

Redland City Council is calling on the community to help design a ‘new-look’ Bloomfield Street Park in Cleveland Central Business District (CBD).

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the feedback received would inform draft designs for the park, which would then be released for community comment in late September.

“Redland City Council and the State Government have dedicated funds to create an exciting new design for Bloomfield Street Park because we realise it has enormous potential to draw more people into Cleveland, providing flow on benefits from local businesses” Cr Williams said.

“We will be hosting a fun family morning with face painting and craft on Saturday 30 August from 9.00am – 12.00pm so people can come, have fun with their kids and share their vision for the future of this park.”

“Bloomfield Street Park is in the heart of Cleveland, but it is 20 years since its last major upgrade and it’s time to look at new designs to breathe new life into park.

“No doubt there are plenty of locals who grew up playing in the park and this is their chance to be part of the next phase of the park’s life and ensure it remains a key part of the city.

Division 2 Councillor for Cleveland, Cr Craig Ogilvie, said the Bloomfield Street Park Transformation Project was only the first of a raft of upcoming measures to bring new people and investment to Cleveland.

“Bloomfield Street Park is a catalyst project for the Cleveland CBD and we want people’s ideas on what makes a great park. You name it – from technology to art installations and play equipment, we are open to community ideas,” he said.

“Work is well underway on some truly innovative and exciting revitalisation strategies for Cleveland CBD that we plan to announce in the very near future, including innovative and exciting events – so watch this space.

“In addition to the fun morning on Saturday 30 August, there will also be an engagement session in the park on Friday 29 August from 9.30am – 11.30am.”

Bargain hunters get a safer and more efficient RecycleWorld

A safer and more efficient RecycleWorld facility has reopened at the Redland Bay transfer station following upgrades and changes to operating hours.

Redland City Council CEO Bill Lyon said the changes were focused on improving safety at the popular shop which is a trash and treasure facility where people can pick pre-loved items such as books, bicycles, and furniture.

“This is a very popular facility for local bargain hunters and this popularity has previously resulted in some safety issues with the high number of customers resulting in traffic and pedestrian congestion,” he said.

“Safety improvements to the facility include a new pedestrian access gate which will see customers entering and exiting the shop away from traffic and loading areas as well as the installation of CCTV and security officers to monitor customer behavior.

Mr Lyon said RecycleWorld would now operate Thursday and Saturday from 9am – 2pm, with a progress report to come to Council in April next year.

“Under the changes RecycleWorld will now be operated by Council staff rather than a contractor for a period of two years with a progress report to be prepared in April so Council can ensure safety, efficiency and customer service is maintained,” he said.

“This allows all staff on site to work across both RecycleWorld and the transfer station, meaning everyone is working towards the common goals of safety, customer service and resource recovery.

“RecycleWorld’s new operating hours and access arrangements are designed to reduce the number of vehicles accessing the Redland Bay transfer station at peak times, particularly over the weekend; ultimately improving the service experience for those using the facility.”

Sundial sets the perfect mood for RPAC

Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) has always been the home of great live entertainment and now it’s home to great coffee too.

RPAC’s Sundial Cafe, open Monday to Saturday 7.30am – 1pm and
during RPAC performances, now offers hot and cold beverages and light snacks.

Located in the RPAC Plaza, 2-16 Middle Street, Cleveland the Sundial Cafe is a great place to stop and get a quick coffee on your way to work or before enjoying a performance.

RPAC Manager Zane Trow said the cafe was proving a popular addition to the centre.

“We are always looking for new ways to make every visit to RPAC a memorable one and encourage people to come back again and again,” he said.

“This follows the tapas and live entertainment nights that commenced recently, showing that RPAC is not just a venue for great shows, but also a place for residents to come together and socialise.

“The RPAC Box Office has also been relocated inside the Concert Hall.  The Box Office opening hours remain the same.”
