The dedication of former Redland City resident and long-time doctor Noel Barker will be forever displayed in a Victoria Point Park that was named in his honour at the weekend.

Division 4 Councillor Lance Hewlett attended a ceremony along with Dr Barker’s friends and family where a sign bearing his name was unveiled.

“Dr Noel Barker was held in the highest regard, not only as a medical professional but as a long time resident and contributor to the Redlands’ community,” Cr Hewlett said.

“Such was Dr Barker’s standing in the community that when he passed away last year a local resident approached me to ask Council to name the park in his honour, a request Council was only too happy to assist with.

“The fact that a local park near his childhood home where he grew up now bears his name is a fitting tribute to a great man.”

Cr Hewlett said Saturday’s unveiling ceremony was a quiet occasion where close family remembered a man dedicated to his profession, family and local community.

“Noel was known as an “old-school” doctor who not only worked tirelessly in his own private practice, but also regularly visited patients at home after-hours,” Cr Hewlett said.

“He worked right up until his death last year and there are many in the community who have fond memories of Dr Barker treating family members with a keen eye and a kind word.”
