This weekend North Stradbroke Island accommodation providers will receive emergency packs giving visitors all the vital information about what to do in the event of an island natural disaster.

A joint project between Redland City Council and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) will see 500 packs delivered across the Island with emergency contacts, evacuation points and other key information.

Redland City Mayor said the ‘Are you ready Straddie?’ information pack would include everything visitors need to know to prepare for, respond to and recover from a natural disaster.

“As we know from the January 2014 fires, emergency situations do happen on North Stradbroke Island, and these present unique challenges for emergency services and island residents and visitors,” she said.

“We have extensive disaster planning in place to respond to any event, but residents and visitors also have a role to playing ensuring their own safety and the safety of their loved ones and property.

“We have spent significant time preparing and providing emergency information for island residents and this weekend’s delivery will complement this by ensuring holidaymakers also have ready access to all the information they need.”

QFES Station Officer and Island resident Bill Ewing said Island QFES volunteers would make the deliveries and be available to answer questions.

“Straddie’s peak holiday season coincides with the height of the storm and bushfire season, so the timing is perfect to spread this message,” he said.

“The ‘Are you Ready Straddie?’ packs are another great example of the partnership between QFES and Redland City Council working to build a safer community.”
