Local history – Ormiston’s sweet beginnings

Did you know that Ormiston was one of the birthplaces of the Australian sugar industry? Captain Louis Hope, who also named Ormiston after a village in Scotland, grew and milled the first commercially produced sugar in Queensland.

Pictured is the mill, which was dismantled and sold in 1875.

The Hope family home – Ormiston House – has stood the test of time, continuing to draw visitors to the Redlands.

More on this historic property, including details of their events and tours, are available on the Ormiston House website.
