Visit Redlands Coast for Brisbane Ekka long weekend

Naturally wonderful Redlands Coast will be welcoming visitors for the rescheduled Brisbane Ekka long weekend in October to tick off some top attractions on their local long-break bucket lists.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council would soon roll out a tourism campaign highlighting the great getaway ideas which were “just up the road yet a world away” on Redlands Coast.

“As Redlands Coast has already had its Ekka public holiday, everything will be open and welcoming visitors and locals for the Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Scenic Rim Ekka long weekend from Friday 29 October,” Cr Williams said.

“COVID is likely to present difficulties for longer-distance travel for some time, so we want to make sure the rest of South-East Queensland realise that just down the road on Redlands Coast there are some inspiring natural attractions from glamping and beach camping, bush retreats and activities to bayside and ocean adventures.”

The tourism campaign is part of a Mayoral Minute outlining Redland City Council’s ongoing financial and other support for pandemic-affected local businesses and community organisations and supported by Councillors at today’s General Meeting.

Cr Williams said local government continued to play a vital role in the COVID response.

“During this pandemic Council has responded immediately to help stop the spread of the virus, keep our communities safe and provide critical services to the residents of Redland City,” she said.

“We have spent millions of dollars and countless hours of effort to support the community, including allocating $1 million for a COVID recovery fund; establishing a targeted grants program for community organisations and sporting clubs; contributing grants funding of nearly $17.5 million awarded through State and Federal stimulus programs; and strengthening our Local Buy policy.

“My Mayoral Minute also noted the critical and changing role of Council in responding to COVID-19 and protecting our community. It also committed Council to continuing to remain agile in maintaining and delivering services and support for our community during this pandemic.”

Cr Williams said Council was working with local tourism operators and businesses to ensure exceptional COVID-safe experiences awaited local residents and visitors.

Straddie Chamber of Commerce president Col Battersby said it was imperative to do everything possible to promote Redlands Coast to visitors.

“Council and the city’s chambers of commerce work closely to promote the city and it pays off for tourism operators each time we embark on a campaign,” he said.

“So, if you are having the Ekka long weekend in October I encourage you to take a break on Redlands Coast, and in particular Straddie, that is on your doorstep. October is a wonderful time to come to Straddie and we look forward to welcoming you.”

Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce president Rebecca Young said local businesses were working hard to ensure they could attract visitors to the city and congratulated Council for supporting them through the Ekka long weekend tourism campaign.

“Tourism is one of the sectors most affected by lockdowns and any support that can be provided to encourage more people to come and spend here is welcomed.”

Redlands Coast experiences named among state’s best

An extraordinary 16 Redlands Coast enterprises have been listed on Tourism and Events Queensland’s 2019 Best of Queensland Experiences.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the result was exceptional and underscored the benefits of Council’s tourism strategy and the growing value of the city’s new brand: Redlands Coast – naturally wonderful.

“Being named among the Best of Queensland Experiences is quite a feather in the caps of those businesses which make it on to the list, and to have 16 of them in Redlands Coast is a great achievement,” Cr Williams said.

“These businesses have shown they can deliver exceptional customer experiences up there with the best in the state, which will help attract more visitors to Redlands Coast, boost our economy and ultimately create more local jobs.

“We now have a clear identity which local residents and businesses helped to create and it is paying dividends in a number of ways – more potential visitors now know what we stand for and the naturally wonderful things we have to offer, while businesses are embracing it with enthusiasm to promote themselves and our city.

“To now have such great representation on Tourism and Events Queensland’s Best of Queensland Experiences list, which recognises the high-quality experiences that best bring the Queensland story to life, is icing on the cake.

Events boost for Redland City

Redland City Council has endorsed a comprehensive events strategy and action plan as part of its suite of moves to stimulate the local economy.

Mayor Karen Williams said the Redland City Events Strategy and Action Plan 2017 – 2022, approved at today’s general meeting, would help define the Redlands as an events destination, boost jobs creation and support local businesses

“With our warm hospitality and lifestyle, community pride, arts and culture, the Redlands is ideally placed to attract event goers,” Cr Williams said.

“While we are already developing a great reputation with a range of unique local events, national sports events and cultural showcases, there are many more opportunities that we can pursue in our quest to become a premier events destination.

“This five-year plan provides a collective vision for the Redlands to become known as one of Australia’s most event-friendly destinations, with a balanced calendar of events across the City that attract visitors, boost the economy and enhance our community and cultural fabric.

“It is aimed at supporting existing events, building local community capacity to deliver exciting and sustainable events and attracting new events that fit our City’s events vision.

“Events are recognised as a major tourism attractor. Studies undertaken by Tourism Research Australia indicate that an event is the reason for 57% of first-time visitors to a region and 69% of repeat visitors.

“People are spending more disposable income on travel and attend – and expect more – from events and festivals, with the most popular being food and wine or music-related events.”

Cr Williams said the events strategy complemented the Redland City Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 2015–2020 and Redland City Council Corporate Plan 2015–2020 as well as the work of the Redlands Economic Development Advisory Board.

“It is informed by local feedback and sets out how events operators, businesses, Council and other agencies can work together to achieve the vision by seizing opportunities for infrastructure, event promotion and networking as well as event coordination, development and investment,’’ Cr Williams said.

“Initiatives such as the formation of a ‘Red Team’ will clear the path for event organisers to meet with relevant stakeholders from Council and other agencies to discuss ideas and learn about available support, including our online resources, development opportunities and funding sources.

“It will help us to leverage opportunities such as those presented by the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the largest event to occur in Australia this decade. In addition, we are working towards having at least one signature event that is synonymous with the identity of Redland City and is recognised nationally.’’

$400,000 boost for Redlands tourism and investment

Redland City Council has boosted incentives to attract more tourism accommodation and investment to the city.

It follows keen interest in building new places for visitors to stay in the City and last year’s adoption of a five-year tourism action plan which sets out how the tourism industry and Council can work together to increase visitation and tourism spending.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council voted at today’s general meeting to increase by $400,000 the incentives available through its Cleveland CBD and tourism accommodation incentive packages.

“Since the incentives were launched 18 months ago, we have received eleven development applications for tourism accommodation and apartments, with another one pending,’’ Cr Williams said.

“It shows incentives such as development application fee concessions are working in generating investment opportunities and jobs for Redlanders.

“They are also helping to fill a big void in the City, with the lack of tourist accommodation a barrier to fulfilling our potential as a great destination for overseas and domestic tourists.’’

Cr Williams said the uptake of the concessions indicated strength in the local construction and accommodation sectors.

“Council is keen to make the most of that opportunity,’’ Cr Williams said.

“With the original stimulus all but expended 18 months ahead of schedule, this move will capitalise on the momentum we have already generated and ensure that we can not only attract visitors to the Redlands but provide quality places for them to stay.

“Projects that these initiatives have helped attract to the city include a $14 million extension to the Alex Hills Hotel that is due to start construction early this year.

“In addition to refurbishing the hotel this project will also include 40 accommodation units that can be used for people attending functions or conferences.  This will enable the Redlands to host conferences and events, which will deliver real economic returns to the city.

“Two tourism accommodation projects proposed for Waterloo Street have also accessed the incentives.  These two projects would result in 7,767 square metres of vacant city land being transformed into vibrant, new accommodation and commercial precincts.”

The Redlands’ Tourism Accommodation Incentives Package was endorsed by Council in July 2014 to stimulate investment and construction in tourist accommodation, including B&Bs and tourist parks, outside of the Toondah Harbour and Weinam Creek Priority Development Areas.

Council’s City Planning and Assessment spokesperson Cr Julie Talty  said the package supported the Redland City Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 2015 – 2020, which was informed by tourism industry feedback and Council’s Open for Business policy and Economic Development Framework.

“Our tourism action plan, which was adopted unanimously by Council, depends on us meeting tourism industry needs and capturing opportunities as they arise,’’ Cr Talty said.

“The extension of our incentives package ensures that we are ready for those opportunities.’’

Division 2 Councillor Craig Ogilvie (Cleveland, North Stradbroke Island) said the CBD development incentives program was aimed at attracting educational, health and aged-care enterprises and well as tourism accommodation to Cleveland.

“The incentives will continue to be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis to support developments which are of community benefit and which are consistent with the Redlands Planning Scheme and outcomes envisaged by the Cleveland Master Plan,” he said.

“It must also be demonstrated that they will be substantially completed by 30 June 2018.’’

Let the business begin

Redlands businesses are well placed to bid for the opportunities set to emerge from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With the Games to involve one of the most significant State Government procurement programs this decade, a workshop has been organised to help businesses build their capacity to tender competitively for games-related work, as well as for other government business.

During a three-hour interactive session from 8am on Wednesday 20 August at Redlands RSL Club, Passage Street, Cleveland, participants will learn the art of developing and submitting tenders and how to conduct market research to maximise their chances of success.

The workshop is suitable for businesses new to tendering for government business, as well as those which simply want a refresher and to learn the basics about supplying to GC2018.

The Economic Development Strategy is not just about attracting business but about retaining and encouraging local business to grow. It will help to identify new business opportunities in key growth sectors and separate action plans are to be developed for each industry sector as the strategy progresses.


Waterfront watershed

With closure of the Expression of Interest period, the Redlands’ two priority development area projects at Cleveland’s Toondah Harbour and Redland Bay’s Weinam Creek now enter an exciting phase.

Eight strong Expressions of Interest were submitted by firms interested in being part of these exciting projects to create retail, residential and economic hubs for the region. There were also 54 inquiries during the Expression of Interest period.

An expert panel will soon be formed to assess the potential investors, with the Request for Proposals stage to begin in September. Four expressions of interest were lodged for each of the PDAs, with a refined list of potential investors on track for early 2015.

Accommodation incentives

Tourism accommodation providers now have even more reason to invest in the Redlands with Council adopting a tourism accommodation incentives package at its general meeting on July 30.
It follows a Redland City Council resolution in June to investigate measures to generate tourism accommodation projects that will provide local employment by attracting more visitors to the Redlands.

The incentives adopted by Council include:

  • 100 per cent concession for infrastructure charges and development application fees on a “first come, first served” basis for material change of use development (involving building works).
  • Twenty business day priority assessment of development applications that are well made.
  • Rating and utility charge concession during the construction phase for material change of use development


Destination direction

Brisbane Marketing has been working on the Destination Tourism Plan for the Greater Brisbane Region and sought feedback from Redland City Council and local tourism operators.

The plan, more than six months in the making, aims to provide the definitive direction for the visitor economy in the region towards 2020. It will highlight the resources needed to create sustainable and competitive tourism destinations.

The Redlands’ visitor economy stretches beyond just leisure and holiday visitors and includes events, business travel, visiting friends and family as well as travel for a purpose, such as education and health.

The plan will provide the Redlands – which has unique features and experiences, opportunities and challenges – with a clear strategy for supporting a sustainable tourism industry.


International exposure

The Redlands has had exposure to 38 countries through its representation at the recent Australian Tourism Exchange in Cairns and the Australian Tourism Export Council in Sydney.

The events bring together tourism businesses with international travel industry and media. With international operators looking for new destinations for their customers, the Redlands is in a great position to build on its tourism credentials and get draw more international visitors. During the event, many valuable relationships were formed and will continue to develop over the coming months.

Cultural boom

The number of inquiries on cultural tourism is growing, with the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) working with Quandamooka organisations to educate and share stories of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and its people to many groups, schools and universities. Opportunities to grow this important tourism sector and develop new experiences are being explored.

EC3 Global and Eco Tourism Australia are also working closely with QYAC to develop eco-tourism opportunities in the region. QYAC CEO Cameron Costello has just returned from China a trade mission which explored the development of significant eco-tourism ventures.


Straddie Chamber marketing

Stradbroke Chamber of Commerce’s latest campaign is well underway to draw Queensland and interstate residents to the island.

The Straddie Is Campaign, backed by Redland City Council, aims to educate people through digital media, such as YouTube, on how easy it is to travel and get around the island. The strategy incorporates social media and user-generated content.

“For Straddie locals, we experience the great weather, stunning beaches, and precious wildlife every day but we want to share our island with Australia and, in turn, find out what Straddie is to our visitors,” Stradbroke Chamber of Commerce Chairman David Thomson said. “By encouraging people to share what they think is a signature trait of Straddie, they are becoming advocates for our large tourism community and the island.”

The digital campaign will span three months during the island’s off-season.

Sands of time

A group will soon be set up to help transition North Stradbroke Island’s economy from sand mining to sustainable industries.

Member for Cleveland Dr Mark Robinson has announced he has the support of the Government to form a NSI Economic Transition Group to help plan for the island’s economic future. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams will share the role of group chair.

“Much work will need to be done if we are to ensure a smooth transition over coming years from mining to an alternative economy,” Dr Robinson said. “To achieve this aim we will need all parties to be working collaboratively towards a common goal – a sustainable future for the island and its people.’’

The group will work in parallel with the well-established Quandamooka round table.

Business and community leaders who have both an existing interest in the island and a vision for its future would be invited to join the NSI Economic Transition Group.

“Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney has committed to delegating a senior officer from his Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning to be part of the group,’’ Dr Robinson said.

Cr Williams said Redland City Council supported a well-planned approach to the island’s future and was ready to support the Government in driving a successful transition.

Tourism providers encouraged to comment on draft ecotourism plan

Redland City Council is encouraging local tourism operators to review Queensland’s draft ecotourism plan recently released for comment by the State Government.

Spokesperson for Council’s Tourism and CBD activation portfolio Councillor Craig Ogilvie said it was important local providers reviewed the Government’s plan.

“Our unique location and beautiful natural attractions are a major drawcard for tourists and bring strong economic benefits to the Redlands,” he said.

“The Redlands is well positioned as a destination of choice and our many attractions include the pristine environment of North Stradbroke Island, our southern Moreton bay islands and our hinterland locations,” Cr Ogilvie said.

Cr Ogilvie said as tourism provided a number of benefits to the Redlands, it was important to keep the industry strong.

“Our location provides strong potential for nature based tourism and is a differentiator that sets us apart from some of our competition, so this plan needs to provide the necessary support to ensure our local industry continues to attract visitors to the region.”

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council strongly supported the growth of nature-based and ecotourism in the Redlands with key goals including environmentally sustainable buildings.

“One example of this is Council’s approval of the Mt Cotton eco cabins.  Initiatives like this by local tourist operators help promote the region’s natural beauty and are part of the reason more than one million visitors come to the local area each year,” Cr Williams said.

“Our natural environment in the Redlands is our local industry’s strength and we have to be constantly looking for new ways to improve what we do and new opportunities to expand our tourism product.”

Sue Panuccio from Mt Cotton Guesthouse said the eco cabins approved by Council were nearing completion and would add to an already strong local ecotourism industry.

“There are some good examples of ecotourism in the Redlands, including parts of North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Bay and Mt Cotton bushland,” she said.

“I think there is huge opportunity to capitalise on the location and natural beauty we have available so I would encourage everyone to read the draft plan and comment.”

The draft plan is available for viewing and comment until Friday 31 May 2013 on the department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing website www.nprsr.qld.gov.au.

Tourism gong for Council

Redland City Council’s support for the local tourism industry was recognised on Friday night, with Council winning the inaugural Local Government Award for Tourism at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

While the awards have been running for more than 25 years, this is the first year a local government category has been included.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the city was on the eve of even greater prospects for tourism.

“We have stunning natural attractions and a range of excellent tourism products here in the Redlands,” Cr Williams said.

“A thriving tourism sector will have dynamic flow-on effects for our local economy and our community.

“This award is a great opportunity for us to say even louder and prouder ‘come to the Redlands for  you holidays and day trips’. We are open for business.”

The new category was open to all local government authorities in Queensland and recognises excellence in tourism planning, the provision of tourism facilities and services, marketing, event development and management, and the overall contribution made both locally and to Queensland’s tourism industry.

Council’s tourism focus has been to deliver the vision in its tourism strategy for the Redlands to be ‘the most accessible, diverse and protected nature playground within Brisbane’s Moreton Bay and islands’.

In pursuing this, Council has worked to key performance indicators based on sound research and contemporary industry development and marketing principles, actively encouraging industry growth, and partnerships and networks across the entire region.

The Queensland Tourism Awards ceremony was held at the Brisbane Convention Centre, with the local government award being accepted by Mayor Williams and Council’s Senior Adviser Tourism Development, Paula Rathgeber.

The Redlands was well represented, with other local award submissions from IndigiScapes, Big Red Cat, Stradbroke Island Events, Fishes on the Point (Point Lookout).

Cr Williams congratulated tourism operators in the Redlands for their partnership approach to building the local tourism sector.

The awards are run by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council and recognise outstanding achievement across the state. They are judged by submission.

Straddie Holiday Parks and 4WD and Beach Camping Permits under new management from 1 November

North Stradbroke Island’s holiday parks, beach camping and four-wheel driving permits will transfer to a new operator in November marking a new era for the popular parks.

From 1 November, Minjerribah Camping Pty Ltd, trading as Straddie Camping, will take over the operation and management of the holiday parks and the administration of four-wheel driving and beach camping permits on North Stradbroke Island. This follows a Federal Court Native Title determination.

As part of the new arrangements, Council will relinquish its Trusteeship of the State Land on which the parks are situated, and a new Trusteeship will be issued to the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC by the State Government.

Redland City Mayor, Karen Williams said Straddie Camping, which will be jointly owned by entities established by the Quandamooka people of North Stradbroke Island and Indigenous Business Australia, would continue to operate Straddie’s holiday parks as camping and caravan parks.

“The operation of the holiday park business by Straddie Camping provides the Quandamooka people, as the traditional owners and native title holders, with a significant opportunity to enhance the parks and create a thriving, long-term business that reflects the island’s unique cultural and environmental values,” Cr Williams said.

“The holiday parks on North Stradbroke Island are loved by many visitors. This is an iconic South-East Queensland tourist destination and the holiday parks have great potential under the new management.

“All existing bookings for the popular holiday parks, and for beach camping permits, made before 1 November, and four-wheel drive permits issued prior to 1 November, will be honoured by the new manager.

“Council and Straddie Camping have worked towards a seamless transition for visitors and residents over the coming summer holiday season following the transfer of the park operations,” Cr Williams said.

From 1 November, 2012 visitors wishing to make accommodation bookings for the holiday parks at Adder Rock, Amity Point, Bradburys Beach, Cylinder Beach, Thankful Rest and Adam’s Beach, or beach camping permit bookings for the Flinders Beach Foreshore and Main Beach Foreshore, will need to contact Straddie Camping on Tel: (07) 3409 9668

Visitors and residents will also need to contact Straddie Camping from 1 November to purchase their four wheel driving permits and replacement stickers, and are advised to check first with Straddie Camping for information on available outlets.

For the first time, visitors will be able to make and pay for bookings online under the new Straddie Camping arrangements.

Current beach 4WD access conditions will remain unchanged. The land remains designated
for recreational use under State legislation.

A dog off-leash area between Flinders and Amity has been removed under separate state
recreation area amendments.

Point Lookout Gorge Walk officially opened

Queensland Senator Mark Furner, Redland City Deputy Mayor Cr Alan Beard and Divisional Councillor for North Stradbroke Island Cr Craig Ogilvie officially opened Stage 2 of the upgraded Point Lookout Gorge Walk on North Stradbroke Island today.

The site has changed over its history from a small track to a world-first boardwalk, and now it’s time to discover it for yourself.

The upgraded 1.2km boardwalk offers countless opportunities to view local flora and fauna against the stunning backdrop of the headlands and Pacific Ocean.

The most recently completed stage of the renovated boardwalk (Stage 2) was co-funded by Redland City Council and the Australian Government through its Regional and Local Community Infrastructure grant program (RLCIP).

The total project cost for Stage 2 was $1.10 million, with Council contributing $748,000 and the remaining $352,000 financed through RLCIP funding.

Works included replacing the boardwalks and viewing platforms, and installation of new decks, handrails and seating in hardwood timbers.

The boardwalk is a world-first, using Queensland-developed composite material, in combination with hardwood rails and decking, to create environmentally sustainable infrastructure that is cost effective and has less environmental and social impacts.

Deputy Mayor Alan Beard said the finished boardwalk was an outstanding achievement that created new tourism opportunities for North Stradbroke Island.
“The Point Lookout Gorge Walk has always been a ‘must-do’ when you some to Straddie, but now it is safer and more accessible than ever before,” Cr Beard said.

“This project is a wonderful example of governments working together to achieve a positive outcome for a local community, and I thank the Australian Government for its financial contribution and support.”

Cr Craig Ogilvie said the boardwalk was one of Queensland iconic scenic spots and had been well used since stage 2 works were finished.

“Council is committed to seeking out and improving sustainable tourism opportunities for North Stradbroke Island and I am sure the improved boardwalk will continue to be a major drawcard for tourists visiting the Redlands,” Cr Ogilvie said.

Winners announced: 2012 Moreton Bay & Islands Tourism Awards

Redland City tourism operators took out almost half of the awards on offer at the 2012 Moreton Bay & Island Tourism Awards last night.

The awards were announced at The Landing, Dockside, at Kangaroo Point, with local businesses winning eight of the 18 categories.

Iconic tourism products on North Stradbroke Island and the Redlands mainland vied for titles alongside other regional operators from Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Regional Council areas.

Redlands Kayak Tours won the Tourist Attraction category for Katrina and Tony Beutel’s fun water-based tours that provide a unique and sustainable way to experience the bay.

Mount Cotton Guesthouse won the Deluxe Accommodation category, recognising owners Sue Panuccio and Trevor Penson’s focus on hospitality, fine food, quality accommodation and beautiful surrounds. Across the bay, Macleay Island Accommodation won the Standard Accommodation category, for the range and quality of accommodation and continual business improvements delivered by Belinda Greenway.

Council’s own Redlands IndigiScapes Centre was again a winner, taking out the Eco Tourism category for its environmentally-based programs and the popular bush experience staff provide for local and international visitors.

Four North Stradbroke Island operators were honoured in the awards, including Stradbroke Island Events, which took out the Specialised Tourism Services category. The award recognised the exceptional services provided by Donna Shannon for functions and celebrations on the island.
Straddie Kingfisher Tours won the Tour and/or Transport Operator category, acknowledging the contribution of Barefoot Dave (Thelander) to the island’s tourism economy; and the Big Red Cat won Major Tour and/or Transport Operator for its continued commitment to excellence.

Fishes at the Point (Point Lookout) has been working hard in recent years to become more sustainable, and the efforts of Colin Battersby and his team were rewarded with the Excellence in Sustainable Tourism category.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said she was delighted to see so many local businesses recognised at a regional level.

“Here in the Redlands we offer a great range of quality products and services to our visitors. Congratulation to all our winners,” the Mayor said.
