The fuss about what you flush

Council is reminding residents that ‘wet wipes’ cannot be flushed down the toilet. Contrary to some product labels, most wet wipes do not break down like toilet paper and are literally ‘blocking up’ our sewerage system.

It’s a growing problem with serious financial and environmental costs. Pumping stations around Redlands are having to be cleared of wet wipes on a daily basis. When you consider this job takes an hour at each station, requires a crane and at least two officers on site, you start to understand the cost to the community.

Wipes can also clog your own house plumbing, causing the very unwanted and costly problem of sewage backflow.

So next time nature calls, remember that humble old loo paper is best for our sewerage system and the only material that should be flushed.
